Abstract

Pollutants deteriorate air quality indoors. Some pollutants infiltrate our homes while other contaminants are generated indoors by habits at home and our purchases. Presently, significant efforts are being made to reduce depletion of the ozone layer by regulating air emissions. These efforts have resulted in the improvement of ambient air quality or the prevention of further deterioration of air quality. These governmental and industry actions indirectly benefit indoor air quality. Indoor air pollution also poses a substantial threat to public health and welfare; pollutant concentrations indoors are many times higher than outdoor concentrations. The duration of exposure to contaminated air exacerbates the possible health risks as we spend extensive periods of time at home. Evidence also shows the incidence and severity of illness and symptoms increase in populations with compromised immune systems, children and the elderly. Consequently, the health risks associated with household air pollution is just as important as outdoor air pollution health risks.
