Abstract

Since the mid-1970’s America has been learning to eliminate its dependence on foreign energy supplies. One way it is trying to accomplish this is through the recovery of gas generated from sanitary landfills. This paper will discuss the basics of the Landfill Gas Recovery; methods to utilize this energy; the efforts required to obtain the rights to extract this gas; and the operating history of the world 1s largest Methane Recovery Facility at Fresh Kills, Staten Island, New York from construction to sales.
