Abstract

The last decade has witnessed a proliferation of ideas aimed at countering sagging productivity and decreased job satisfaction in U.S. corporations. Creative organizations are searching for innovations that will improve the effectiveness of their production and service processes. These efforts have been accompanied by the growing awareness that many traditional management practices are no longer appropriate: the employee must be considered an individual with special needs instead of a cog in the machinery of the organization. It seems appropriate that flexible work schedules should now be seriously considered by the management of organizations. Flexible work schedules represent an organizational change which can address the concerns expressed by both managers and employees: does it represent an improvement in quality of work life for employees and does it have potential for improved performance levels within the organization? In general, this thesis is meant primarily as a resource on flexible work schedules. An attempt is made here to provide all of the information available which can help managers or organizational consultants evaluate the appropriateness of flexible work schedules for a particular organizational unit. In other words, I hope to provide interested people with enough information to help them evaluate the potential of flexible work schedules in their organization. No one can undertake this research without a great deal of help. I am especially grateful for all that I have learned from my colleagues at· the New York Institute of Technology, and also three of my professors, Dr. Stephen Hartman, Dr. Irwin Gray, and Charles Fromme, who played key roles in editing and advising on the writing of this thesis research. It must suffice for me to offer my thanks to all who have been my teachers (formal and informal) over the years and to express my appreciation to my wife, my daughter, and to my parents for providing the environment and encouragement necessary to support the kind of work represented in this research.
