Abstract
Throughout the evolution of humanity, numerous societies have neglected the Mental, Emotional, and Physical health of individuals through implementing a progressive detachment from nature. This link between nature and all living things is responsible for the overall health and well-being of not only “Nature” itself, but also all of its occupants. In heavily urbanized settings, the term “Nature” is surmised as a foreign element, generating organic patterns which contradict the rigidity of modern city models. Thus a deep understanding of the ongoing relationship between man and nature can balance a society’s infrastructural instability and reintegrate metabolic systems, especially important in contexts characterized by unplanned chaos. Throughout this process, new metabolic forces will become opportunities for the necessary improvement of the overall quality of life.
This study will explore the extent and boundary to which true nature has eternally projected itself within the field of architecture, and specifically how the harmonization of “Landscape” and its transformative processes through advanced “Technologies” can be used to enhance contemporary environmental conditions while yet reintegrating a healthy symbiosis between society and nature. Such methods which develop more resilient urban communities must be applied in densely populated contexts, interlacing themselves with quickly growing urban systems like Ouagadougou, a West African City in the country of Burkina Faso. While dealing with the problems of lacking infrastructures like access to drinking water, food, and electricity the people of Ouagadougou are extremely hindered by the overwhelming amount of pollution and waste in the streets. All of which can have can be addressed through a city-wide intervention, one which pumps all necessary services through a living, metabolic, transformative, “Eco-Spine”. To come anywhere close to achieving this, a variety of coordinated expertise must be applied creatively towards developing, sustainable, and resilient solutions.
