The groundwater resources play a significant role for agricultural and drinking water supply in Henan province in China. However, human’s activities gradually pollute the quality of groundwater recent years. This project has evaluated the situation of ammonia-nitrogen pollution in groundwater in Henan province in China and discovered that there is serious ammonia-nitrogen pollution in Henan province, especially Zhengzhou city and almost of them come from industrial wastewater and agricultural activities such as fertilizer and pesticide. There are two measures to address ammonia-nitrogen pollution in groundwater in Henan province in this study, one is air stripping method to address ammonia-nitrogen wastewater which come from industrial areas and discharge into environment, another one is permeable reactive barrier(PRB) method to handle with the ammonia-nitrogen pollution which already exited in groundwater in Henan province. Depending on the investigative results, the concentration of ammonia-nitrogen wastewater which is treated by air stripping technology and permeable reactive barrier system, satisfying the maximum allowable wastewater discharge concentrations for pollutants and the quality of groundwater also satisfies the requirement of drinking water quality standard (Class 3) for groundwater in China. So, both of air stripping and PRB technology are appropriate and efficient for wastewater treatment and groundwater remediation in Henan province. Meanwhile, a comprehensive and suitable strategy or regulation and warning system for groundwater pollution also contribute to groundwater prevention and protection in Henan province.
